Trip Down Memory Lane – Local History

Drumaroad LogoIn 2006 Drumaroad & Clanvaraghan launched a new group that we hope will become an established part of the local community in coming years. The group has heard about our own history from local people who told us about their knowledge of the area and the stories they had heard about it. Mr Oliver Quail generously led a discussion on souterrains that date from the pre- Norman era and the making of the Moune Wall. A curator from Downpatrick Museum gave a talk on how one man in Castlewellan was able to collect historical artefacts that now go to make up an important part of the Museum's holdings. At another meeting, local man, Mr Patrick Clarke, explained important trends in the populations of different townlands of the area since the seventeenth century and participants were able to relate their own families’ history to his presentation. Come along, hear from other people about the history of the area and tell us some of your own stories about Drumaroad and Clanvaraghan. The 'trip down memory lane project' meets on the last Thursday of each month in the Resident’s Lounge of Slieve Croob Inn at 8.00 pm.
